Project Description
The Victorian Injury and Claim Support app, or VicClaim, is a simple and easy-to-use mobile and tablet application to help those navigating their way through the compensation claims process.
The app is supported by WorkSafe’s agents, who manage the direct relationship with employers and workers in relation to claims.
WorkSafe’s Acting Executive Director Insurance Business Unit, Simon Bailey, said the new app not only improved access to claims information but also explained the worker’s compensation system in Victoria.
“The app is designed to simplify the legislative landscape of the compensation system, and also outline important steps in lodging a successful injury claim with WorkSafe,” Mr Bailey said.
“The app is simple and easy to use and will guide injured workers and their employers through the worker’s compensation process. It allows for claims information and tools at your fingertips.”
Features of the app include
- GPS navigation to locate service providers close by.
- A list of the people involved in the claims process and how they can help you.
- A step-by-step guide to the compensation claims process.
- Details about treatments available to injured workers to assist in their recovery.
- Submit copies of claims materials such as invoices.
- Contact details for approved WorkSafe agents.
Injured workers can
- Understand what to do after they have been injured.
- Learn about how to submit a claim, and what happens after their claim is submitted.
- Discover what they need to know once a claim decision has been made.
- Learn which treatments are available to assist their recovery.
- Understand which treatments the VWA agent needs to approve.
- Use their phone’s GPS functionality to find registered providers in their local area.
- Find out what the people involved in the claim will do to support their recovery and return to work.
- Contact their WorkSafe Agent.

UX Research and Design
Steve Wardle was responsible for the end to end delivery of this project which has so far been delivered in two agile stages.
The task undertaken by Steve in the first stage included:
- business and user requirements gathering
- interviewing potential users
- user group task analysis
- writing the requirements and functional specification
- user experience design
- agile project management
- design and prototyping
- plus user acceptance testing.
Squiz were engaged after the prototype stage to deliver final designs and develop the app on Squiz Matrix.

WorkSafe worked with Ladoo to build the second stage application build which had a tight timeline (four weeks) and needed to be responsive and compliant with a variety of devices and with the added complexity, the user experience had to be accessible and easy to follow.
Ladoo’s developers refactored the existing HTML / CSS Software Development of supporting framework elements, including the Cordova / Ionic current release configuration, using GitHub to collaborate with internal development resources.
This project earned Steve Wardle awards for innovation and collaboration and set the bar for future WorkSafe mobile apps.
The App was launch by the minister and we had over 800 downloads in the first month.
VicClaim is available to download free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
As a result of your expertise and input into the development of VWA’s first mobile application, VIC Claim, the design of the application is intuitive and ensures a quality user experience. You also excelled at identifying solutions to issues that arose during the life of the project.
Your involvement was essential to the success of the project and we look forward to working with you again in the future.”
